Montclair is a mature, stable community in Prince William County. It surrounds a man-made lake and a golf course. Montclair began undergoing development in the late sixties and has not had much new construction since the 1990s. This sort of community has a good mix of older couples and young families, mature trees and fairly good sized yards.
Montclair is considered a “census designated area” which is essentially a community that did not grow out of a small town. It is a popular bedroom community to the D.C area. Until recently, Montclair was officially “Dumfries,” according to the U.S. Postal Service, although the town of Dumfries is several miles away. Montclair was not given its own postal code until 2005.
Lake Montclair, the heart of the Montclair community, was formed by the damming of Powell Creek. The lake has a distinctive forked shape to accommodate the flow from storm drains, and is very popular with residents for fishing, boating and swimming. The waters off Dolphin Beach are 25 ft deep, but the lake is much deeper in the middle.
Residents of Montclair, although located in Prince William County, are also governed by the Montclair Property Owners’ Association. The MPOA upholds their mandate to govern the community by making sure covenance is met, that the lake is well-maintained, and that the security and needs of the community are looked after.
