Gainesville is a census-designated area within Prince William County, VA. It began as a stagecoach exchange on the Fauquier-Alexandria Turnpike, but it wasn’t until the Manassas Gap Railroad reached the site in 1852, that the spot became known as Gainesville. It was along this thoroughfare that troops were able to reach the First and Second Battles of Bull Run in the Civil War.
Gainesville has been a major shipping point for grain, timber and even cattle as late as the 1960s. Its proximity to Washington D.C. has made it a popular bedroom community, especially since the groundbreaking of the first townhome community, The Crossroads, in 1994.
Today, Gainesville is a mature, stable community but with several major shopping centers and nearby award-winning golf courses, it is experiencing a housing boom. Current census data reports about 10,300 households in the Gainesville designated area, with a median income of $76,300.
The soon-to-be completed Gainesville interchange will improve traffic congestion for commuters and is sure to be a consideration for future Gainesville buyers.
